Duck Weed Is...

Duck Weed is a small aquatic plant that grows in large groups on the surface of still, calm water. The layer of duckweed that grows is often contagious and spreads very quickly over the surface of the water. Each Duck Weed plant typically has one to three leaves and a stem that grows down into the water to collect nutrients. There are nine species of duckweed that occur in North America and most of Canada. The only states reported not to have Duck Weed are Hawaii and South Carolina. It is able to spread to different ponds by waterfowl and other wildlife. Duck Weed can be used for several things such as, decontaminating water, feeding farm raised fish, and helping to teach people the basics of plant growth. Many scientist find Duck Weed to be a valuable plant.
